She emphasized the last word, deepening her voice, hitting the C so hard it sounded like a K, and putting a white veneer on top of it. "We settle where Oakland is now, set up like an equitable treaty with the Ohlone there, and cooperate, right? We get along like we shoulda been getting along the whole time. When Desmond laughed, it echoed around the small park. “You’re wild, man,” he said.

“Aw, you scared? You a cute little baby gangster now, too afraid to pull it on somebody who really deserves it?" Anne inhaled again and passed it back to Desmond. She looked up at the skyscrapers in the distance, closed her eyes, and exhaled slowly. "If I had a time machine, I'd fix everything. I mean it, Desmond."
